I lived and worked in Central Asia from 2007 to early 2014. Such a fascinating mix of Silk Road splendor and Soviet oppression, tinged with newly-emerging nationalism and spectacular natural scenery. Many of the Soviet statues and buildings have since been torn down; some of it is the stuff of nightmares. But still, the beauty of this land and its multifaceted history shines through.
